EAONO Presentation

Dear colleagues and friends!

The main purpose of EAONO is education. Education of younger collegues to reach the highest level of specialisation in otology and neurotology, ultimately to the benefit of patients suffering from diseases within these fields. At the heart of dedicated education we find science – from basic science at the bench to cutting-edge clinical science at the bedside. Thus, a scientific base for teaching is at the core of the EAONO soul.

Our bi-annual instructional courses combined with consensus sessions is the main activity of EAONO and at these gatherings you will find a faculty of global leaders in the field, dedicated to teaching at the highest international level. Consensus sessions set the golden standard for contemporary treatment, implementing current scientific knowledge and pushing the limits for what is possible when we work in our out-clinics and operating rooms.

We have just now finished the successful instructional course held in Izmir, Turkey in January 2017 and this was a great achievement for the president Nuri Ozgirgin, and his friendly and professional team. Professor Ozgirgin has accomplished remarkable achievements during his presidency. Besides organizing and chairing the Izmir meeting, Nuri has initiated the trans-European dissection course project TEPONE (see elsewhere on this homepage), established The International Journal of Advanced Otology, the Global Otologic Forum and the Vestibular Academy International, just to mention the most prominent of his many labours.

As the president for the next two years to come, I stand honoured and humble, challenged to fill the big shoes of Nuri Ozgirgin and all the previous presidents - upon their shoulders we all stand. During the next years, we will continue the work with the establishment of short clinical exchange visits between centres, EAONO fellowships and EAONO guidelines for treatment. Importantly, we will also seek to strengthen relationships with colleagues and sister organisations around the world, in order to promote exchange of knowledge, views and sentiments between continents.

The next instructional courses with consensus sessions will be in Copenhagen in 2018, scheduled to be in September.

Copenhagen is a clean, green and friendly city with a low crime rate, easy to reach from almost any major city in the world. A remarkable mix of classic and modern architecture will meet you when walking the short distances between city centre highlights and some of the most renowned restaurants in the world, serving new Nordic food based entirely on local commodities.

I am looking very much forward to welcome you and host the meeting in Copenhagen 2018, and hope that you will join us for some days of brain challenge, open discussions, exchange of ideas and a lot of fun!

With the warmest regards,

Per Caye-Thomasen

President, EAONO
