In the 90th, simultaneously Europe was a dream and considerable progress in advanced otology border by neurology and neurosurgery were emerged creating the need to identify the different centers across Europe, to bring together their different expertise and to promote within ORL specialty Neuro-Otology as official subspecialty covering pathology, assessment and neurotologic surgery of the skull base and cerebello-pontine angle.
Such a concept has been disseminated under the leadership of Jacques Magnan from a regional otologic group (Bebear, Dubreuil, Deguine, Chobaut, Fraysse, Uziel, Sterkers, Martin, Romanet, Vanecloo…) and colleagues from Italy (Zini, Babighian, Trabalzini, Mazzoni, Sanna, Filipo, Quaranta, Mira, Livi), from Spain (Garcia-Ibanez, Claros, Antoli-Candela, Cenjor, Scola), from Belgium (Ars, Offeciers, Gersdorff, Somers, Van de Heyning), from Netherland (van den Broek, Graamans, Tange, Grote, Cremers), from UK (O’Donoghue, Bowdler), from Germany (Huttenbrink, Federspil, Lenarz, Laszig, Zenner, Mann, Helms), from Switzerland (Fisch, Linder, Hausler), from Portugal (Gamerio, Rui, Andrea), from Greece (Georgopoulos, Helidonis, Ferekidis),from Sweden (Bagger-Sjoback), from Denmark (Tos, Thomsen), from Poland (Szyfter, Niemczyk, Skarzynski), from Israel (Sadé), from Bulgaria (Karchev, Dimov), from Ireland (Blayney), from Turkey (Ozgirgin, Hizalan)
This initiative rapidly transformed in an international group with Ramsden, Moffat, Yung, O’Connor(UK), Tos (DK), Jahnke, Gjuric , Draf (D), Paw (NL), Ozgirgin (T), Moller (N), Hulttranz, Mercke, Magnusson (S) Aristegui, Ramos (SP), Profant (SK), Sziklai (H) to create a strong and representative society at the European level.
A multidisciplinary European Skull Base Society (ESB) was already existing but too dependent of neurosurgeons. One of the goals of Neuro-Otology was to keep within the subspecialty the medical and surgical components in order to take care of the pathology from diagnosis to treatment as we do as ORL specialists.
In 1995 thank to Trabalzini in Montepulciano the first business has been organized under the chairmanship of G. Babighian, U. Fisch, J. Magnan. to define the bases, the statues and the name of European Academy of Otology Neuro-Otology (EAONO) (Figures 1-8).
In 1998 during the Politzer meeting in Alghero, the first EAONO general assembly elected the steering committee and, Mirko Tos as President. EAONO had 276 members including 108 founder members from 21 different countries
From 1998 to 2002 EAONO established links with Politzer society under the presidency of M. Wigand, with UEMS, and with EUFOS thanks to K. Jahnke.
The major activity of Tos was to get EAONO international recognition with the support of an international Journal. The editor in chief of American Journal of Otology (AJO) R. Jackler agreed to move the name of the journal to a new Neuro-Otology journal to promote Neuro-Otology in the ORL field and to become the official publisher of EAONO at the same level as the American Societies. G. O’Donoghue became associate editor.
In 2002 with U. Fisch as president the first EAONO instructional workshop has been organized in Nice. As EAONO is non profitable organization devoted to teaching in the field of otology and Neuro-Otology the registration fees were and still are kept to a minimum since the course instructors do pay registration fees and receive no compensation of their time except the appreciation of the attendees and formal recognition of the EAONO (Figures 9-17).
In 2004 with Magnan as president the second EAONO workshop again was organized in Nice and was settled a curriculum development in Neuro-Otology: Harmonizing Knowledge and Teaching (Figure 18-23).
In 2006, the European Curriculum Diploma is a definitive recognition of Neuro-Otology as subspecialty of ORL (reference number: 28483-IC.1-FR. ERASMUS-PROGUC-3(2006-2495). Its dissemination and implementation is still pending (Figures 24-25).
In 2016 The “Advanced Otology” Fellowship Program has been introduced to UEMS by Nuri Ozgirgin, and this was accepted officially as being the advanced training program on Otology and Neurotology
In 2006, with Huttenbrink as president, third EAONO workshop in Cologne then each next president organized EAONO workshop every two years in their country (Figures 26-32).
In 2008, with E. Offeciers as president, forth EAONO workshop was celebrating in Palma de Mallorca, Spain (Figure 33)
In 2010, a Joint Meeting on IV Consensus on Auditory Implants, was celebrating in Parma, Italy, organized by A. Ramos (Figure 34-35).
In 2010 EAONO established the working groups of “Guidelines in Otology” and introduced by Franco Trabalzini. Among them two groups, one “Working group on cholesteatoma” and the other “Working group on vestibular diseases.” Concluded their work and both were published (Figure 36-37).
In 2012, with M. Profant as president, 6th EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating in Bratislava, Slovakia (Figure 38)
In 2014, with F. Trabalzini as president, 6th EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating in Bratislava, Slovakia (Figure 39-40).
In 2015 “TEPONE” (Trans European Postgraduate Otology Neurotology Education) project was initiated by Nuri Ozgirgin. Intends to increase the level of education for otolaryngologists on otology and as well give support to otology involved colleagues with further information and experience on Neurotology. This project does not conflict with the proposed program but aims to give support to personal efforts for postgraduate training. Indeed TEPONE is a kind of projection to CD Project established by Jacques Magnan. It gathered the Temporal Bone Dissection Courses and Clinical Visit Programs (Figures 41-42).
In 2015 EAONO was accepted to be part of CEORL (Figure 43)

In 2016, with N. Ozgirgin as president, 8th EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating in Izmir, Turkey (Figure 44-51).
In 2018, with P. Caye-Thomsen as president, 9th EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating in Copenhagen, Denmark (Figure 52-56).
During 2020-22 Meeting (Covid Period – Online Meeting), with Shakeel Saeed as president, EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating (Figures 57-59).
By the year 2023 The Journal of International Advanced Otology has been announced as being the “Official Journal of EAONO” (Figure 60).
In 2024, with J as president, 10th EAONO instructional workshop and consensus on auditory implants was celebrating in Nijmegen, Netherlands (Figure 61).
